Not all fashions in this line are shown in the catalog picture below. That started in 1998 and is continuing this year. There are some store exclusives in the Fashion Avenue line this year. Store exclusives are almost never included in the 1990’s vendor catalogs, but there are a lot of general playline available to all retailers that are not shown in catalogs either. This change in practice in the 1990’s makes it much harder for today’s playline collectors!
The Boutique line fashions have a different inside of package background, white with grey pencil line scenes of a bedroom and a coat rack style mannequin. The big difference is in the back of package design The Boutique line has the text “Barbie Fashion Avenue Clothes Real clothes for Barbie doll and friends. Dolls and fashions sold separately, subject to availability. Colors and accessories may vary.” Gone are the “runway” or “snapshot” design. Instead there is a checklist feel because the photographs of dolls in the fashions are against a pink and orange background in clear rows and columns, but there are many fashions missing. That’s understandable because there are so many fashions this year but then why choose this design. When the fashions switch to the 2000’s look there are no line names against a white background and it looks much better.
