Fashion Avenue line names and years and other websites read about them here.
In 1998 Mattel continued the Fashion Avenue line names on packaging. The back of the packages for Bridal, Lingerie, Ken, Evening Wear, Party, and Boutique continue to have photographs of Barbie dolls wearing the fashions, similar to 1996 and 1997 but with more of a runway look. This year the denim focused line is named “Authentic Jeans.” I don’t have any of these fashions in my collection now so I can’t feel the fabric to confirm it is actually denim and not a denim look print. The denim line packaging has some big changes. The background of the inside of front package has a black and white photo look, with two “wood” tables printed. The back of package features Barbie in the fashions in a city scene background. This year Kelly has her own Fashion Avenue line. The Kelly Baby Sister of Barbie doll line background arches are sized differently and the back of the package shows four of the five different fashion packs in a circle on graphics with text background of pink and periwinkle. The Bridal line again has a pink in package background, rather than white. The “wood” shelves print is more ornate. Instead of wood tables, Ken has marble look columns printed on his in package background. Kelly and Ken have cardboard accessories.
Skipper also has her own line, in the larger “Teen Skipper” size. Kelly and Skipper lines, like Ken, are in packages with just their name, and no further individual line names. Boutique continues to be the largest line. Internationale is back for it’s final year, with country, rather than season names. The Matchin’ Styles line now includes three fashions for Ken and Tommy, with their names on the front inside package background. In 1998 All wedding gowns are in the Bridal line. Evening Wear includes a tuxedo for Ken. Again this year there are re-issues of previous years, some with changes in fabric color or pattern, but more than enough new fashions and lines for this Fashion Avenue Collection year to stand on it’s own! The changes in packaging inside, and back are interesting this year and help the lines feel like actually separate lines in a collection.
